La externalización (ISO1 y BPO2), una tendencia creciente en la última década, puede suponer un riesgo de gran importancia para las empresas de subsectores industriales como los de Electrónica, Comunicaciones, Aeronáutica o Automoción que consigue que pasen a un segundo plano los beneficios potenciales de esta actividad. Estas empresas son proveedores de las que están suministrando al cliente final, al consumidor. El abuso de la externalización las puede desplazar hacia atrás en la cadena de valor, haciéndoles perder actividades vitales para su negocio generándoles nuevos competidores ¿Cuándo se dan las circunstancias para que esto ocurra? ¿Cuáles son los sectores más proclives a sufrir este trastorno? ¿Hay algún modo que nos permita evaluar y evitar este riesgo? ¿Se ha contrastado con algún caso concreto o estamos hablando de un modelo puramente teórico?
