The decline in the contribution of EU manufacturing industry to total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the simultaneous fall in its share of world manufacturing industry is a fact, as is the overall loss of competitiveness, particularly vis-à-vis China. This is most noticeable in activities with a lower technological content, such metal products or a large part of the electronics sector, with pharmaceuticals being the only one that, for the time being, is resisting external competition.
