La nuevas formulas de trabajo y las tecnicas de fabricacion que los japoneses habian introducido con gran agresividad en el mercado competitivo mundial desde 1960, forzaron a los E.E.U.U. a revisar su propia filosofia de produccion. Corria el año 1980 y los responsables americanos del sector del automovil en plena etapa de recesión económica, contemplaban atonitos como la penetración japonesa habia pasado del 2% en 1970 al 21,3% diez años despues. Algo habia que revisar en el sistema y el interes de las nuevas formulas de produccion se centraron en el método 'just in time" consistente en exigir a los proveedores una fabricacion y entregas ajustadas en tiempo y cantidad a las necesidades. Era el combate a los tiempos perdidos, a la existencia de innecesarios almacenes. Habia que sincronizar los relojes de la cadena de produccion con exactitud matemática para poder competir con la produccion japonesa.
