After several extensions, in 1891 the Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya built the large neo-Romanesque style building that has survived to the present day, with beautiful double brick arcades. For decades it was the largest and most productive lead smelter in Europe. The depletion of the lead seams in the surrounding area, together with the rising cost and difficulty of transporting the galena from Linares, led to its closure in 1972. The workers were transferred to Cartagena, a city that had a smelter with a mine and at the foot of the seaport.
