In 1846, the Galician philosopher-entrepreneur Ramón de la Sagra, the driving force behind the first modern sugar factory in Spain in Almuñécar, took control of the old Torre del Mar sugar mill and set up a modern factory called "Sociedad El Porvenir", which used steam to drive its modern industrial machinery.
