ABSTRACT
Unfortunately, official statistics demonstrate that security in Machines is one of the most important issues to achieve the best conditions of security
and health in many working areas. According national statistics database, year 2002 (MTAS-INSHT), almost 29% of the investigated fatal accidents were related directly with machines, being the failures in intrinsic prevention (deficient design, incorrect assembly, etc.) the second cause of those accidents. Besides this, norms and legislation to prevent accidents related to machines has evolved in parallel, both at country level and European level, with the generation of laws applied to the machine itself (design of machine) and laws relative to the use of the machines (people protection),
what considerably increases complexity to understand current situation. Although both statistics and legislation show clearly the importance to achieve a good security level in machines in order to get low risk situations and prevent accidents, how relevant is this security concept from the academic education viewpoint? What about University ?
Key Words: Design, security, accident, machines.
