The new European Union's framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe, will run for seven years from 2021 to 2027. This programme is an excellent opportunity for European SMEs and large companies to strengthen their industrial capacities and improve their competitiveness through the collaboration in international R&D projects. This article aims to provide an overview of this EU long-term financing instrument that started in the mid-80s, highlighting its relevance for the industrial sector as the main European R&D funding mechanism.
