In 1810, the Navy Brigadier Diego de Alvear de Alvear y Ponce de León designed a series of channels on the island of León (Cádiz) to guarantee the defence of the square during the siege carried out by French troops during the War of Independence. The Bay of Cadiz and the river Sancti Petri separate Cadiz and the Island of Leon (later called San Fernando) from the rest of the Iberian Peninsula. Analyzing texts of the time, we found that the design and construction of canals, which completed and improved the natural layout, was fundamental in the management of these resources. In the present article we study two channels designed by Diego de Alvear, the problems that they tried to solve with their construction, which was the constructive method used, we investigate to locate the original documents of their design and we try to verify their effective construction, analyzing period plans and orthophotos made in different periods.
