Los "superhormigones" —hormigones sometidos a altas pruebas, enriquecidos con microsilices o fibras— son el origen de una doble revolución en el sector de la vivienda y en las obras publicas: el nacimiento de una verdadera ingenierfa del hormigón y la utilización de este material menos tradicional en el que no se creía, hasta ahora, para estructuras realizadas en acero. El puente de la isla de Ré y el Arco de la Defensa: dos obras prestigiosas que tienen en común, ademas de llevar la firma Bouygues, el figurar entre las primeras realizaciones francesas en "superhormigón"; el material de construcción utilizado en ambos casos es, en efecto, un "hormigón sometido a altas pruebas" (BHP) que, además de los componentes tradicionales —cemento, agua y arena— contiene polvo de silice. Este polvo muy lino (una mezcla tipica contiene cerca de 100.000 microesferas de silice por gramo de cemento) permite aumentar la densidad del material y asi triplicar su resistencia a la compresión. Una cualidad muy apreciada por los ingenieros de Bouygues, ya que cada uno de los 12 pilares del Arco de la Defensa debe soportar un peso de 30.000 t.
