An alternative to realize a CAN BUS network with open source hardware, including Arduino UNO boards and SparkFun/Seeed Studio CAN BUS shields is presented. A four nodes network emulating power train, security, chassis and on-board diagnostics systems, with twelve automotive sensors, has been established. Unlike other reported works, where the use of these or similar development boards focuses on communicating with a vehicle via its on-board-diagnostics port, our proposal aims at the prototyping of automotive networks which allow both understanding and experimentation of present CAN busses. For now, a CAN Classic network was realized, but with the inclusion of the adequate CAN controller and transceiver, an upper CAN version can be accomplished.Keywords: CAN BUS, Automotive Sensors, Automotive Networks, Arduino UNO, SparkFun shield, Seeed Studio shield, Power train, Security, Chassis, On-Board-Diagnosis
