Actualmente, el ozono es una especie química perfectamente definida, pero, hasta finales del siglo XVIII, (y únicamente por manifestaciones léctricas) se conocían las propiedades químicas, fisiológicas u organolépticas que permitían detectarlo. En 1840, Schónbein demostró que, efectivamente, se trataba de una especie química determinada: un gas al que, debido a su olor, llamó "ozono", del griego "ozein" (exhalar olor). La definición de la identidad de este cuerpo fue, durante mucho tiempo, objeto de controversia. Los autores dudaban entre un cuerpo simple, un óxido de nitrógeno, y/o un peróxido de hidrógeno superior al agua oxigenada. Esta incertidumbre provenía de los reactivos utilizados para su dosificación y que son sensibles a todos los oxidantes. El problema quedó resuelto en 1860, cuando la transformación del oxígeno puro en ozono demostró que se trataba de una variedad alotrópica del oxígeno.
