In this paper, a procedure to improve Finite Element (FE) models of machine-tools is introduced. This procedure is applied to a machining center in two geometric configurations, in order to analyze the evolution of its dynamic behavior and evaluate the change of critical parameters such as the stiffness of joints. First, Design of Experiments (DoE) techniques are applied to set initial values of the parameters describing the machine joints. Then, using a model updating iterative technique that includes natural frequencies and mode shapes in the objective function, design parameters are modified to obtain an optimized FE model. Results confirm that the integration of updating and DoE techniques leads to obtain improved FE models that show similar modal parameters to those of the machine-tool. These models will allow to make changes in the design of the machine that contribute to reduce chatter.Keywords: connections, updating techniques, design of experiments, dynamic behavior, machine-tool.
