ABSTRACT:This article describes the detailed design project of the “First phase of waterproofing in the right trough of the Artigas landfill, municipality of Bilbao”, promoted by the Department of Sustainability and Natural Environment of the provincial council of Biscay. The main objective of this intervention is guaranteeing in the forthcoming years the storage capacity of the main landfill in the Territory, the Artigas landfill, for that fraction of secondary waste that cannot be recycled or valorized and has to be inevitably eliminated.Besides, this project represents a success in crystallising the strategies about waste management hierarchization and adoption of initiatives towards a circular economy developed by the Administration, as it promotes the innovative use of valorized waste products as constitutive materials of the main structural elements that are part of the landfill. In this way, the retaining dike supporting the new waste mass is set using a technique of soil reinforcement, employing recycled aggregates produced from construction and demolition waste. The filter layers are in addition formed with siderurgic aggregates from electric arc furnace slag. This initiative gives a decisive boost to the use of valorized materials in innovative high-value civil and industrial works applications. Key Words: landfill, sustainability, eco-design, construction and demolition waste (C&DW), siderurgic aggregates, circular economy
