The environmental objectives promote by the European Commission for the next years and the increased dependence of imported energy sources urge to increase the diversification in the energy provision in Europe. In recent years we have seen a proliferation of biogas plants. Biogas is a renewable energy source mainly produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic matter. This work aims at making a clear and brief overview of the current situation of biogas production in the European Union (EU) and Spain, the integration of this renewable gas fuel into the natural gas grids and the production estimated for the next years. Some studies predict that upgraded biogas (biomethane) could represent around 10 % of the current natural gas consumption in the EU by the year 2030.
