The influence of the secondary or backup protection for estimating voltage sags severity in power systems is assessed through the combined use of the Monte Carlo technique and the SARFI-curve index, considering the most used compatibility references as: ITIC, IEC 61000-4-11, and SEMI-F47.The generation of the voltage sags registers is developed through a short-circuit simulator which involves five stochastic variables: (i) fault rate, (ii) fault impedance, (iii) fault type, (iv) location, and (v) fault clearing time, evaluated in a virtual long-term monitoring simulation through the Monte Carlo sampling method. Additionally, the results of the SARFI-curve index are jointly studied in three power networks, two IEEE test networks (24 and 118 busbars) and the national power network of Ecuador (357 busbars).
