Construction of the site in Spain will begin in 2022 at the facilities of the "Alfonso Maíllo" R&D&I center, and at the Zaragoza Urban Waste Treatment Center, owned by the Zaragoza City Council and located in the Recycling Technology Park). At the end of the project, a commercial-scale biorefinery designed to treat all the biowaste produced by a medium-sized city will be fully operational.23 million European project will design a biorefinery to convert the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge into high value-added products.
Graphenea will participate in a flagship project called CIRCULAR BIOCARBON, which has already been launched and has been awarded more than 23 million euros, to develop a first-of-its-kind flagship biorefinery designed to convert the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and sewage sludge (SS) into value-added products, from mobile mechanical parts, to night vision cameras and devices for 5G telecommunications.
The project, which involves 11 partners from five European countries (including Spain, Italy, Denmark, Denmark, France and Germany), is a milestone for the whole of Europe because of its scale of implementation (at industrial level), as well as its potential for replicability.
The biorefinery is a unique and integrated model with the process lines for OFSMW and SS to be implemented at two sites, Zaragoza (Spain) and Sesto San Giovanni (Italy)."CIRCULAR BIOCARBON" is a circular economy project in which the first biorefinery for the joint treatment of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge at industrial level will be built and operated. The aim is to valorize the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants into value-added products, including graphene, produced in a scalable and economical way.
