In its Civil Nuclear Roadmap document, it details these plans, indicating that by 2050 nuclear power will account for almost 25% of the UK's electricity demand. It currently has the Hinkley Point C project (Somerset) under advanced construction, with two EPR (European Pressure Reactor) units of 1,600 MW each, to be managed and operated by EDF. The former units A and B (2), which are no longer in service, are located at this site.
It also has the Sizewell C (Suffolk) project, almost identical to Hinkley C and on a site where an old unit, unit A, is also out of service and unit B is still operational. It is this project, which had become less active, that seems to be reactivated by the latest decisions.
However, it would be necessary to extend the life of some of the units whose end corresponds to this period until 2050, as well as the construction of at least another large power plant in addition to the two planned. As a location, the Wylfa site on the island of Anglesea (Wales) is being considered, where two old units are already out of service. In order to move forward with this proposal, the government has been urged to purchase the plant from Hitachi, the current owner.
Another of the projects that form part of this British update is the entry into the manufacture of HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium) nuclear fuel, which involves enrichment of between 5 and 20% of the isotope U235. This fuel is suitable for advanced Generation IV reactors and small molten salt SMRs. Russia is currently almost the only producer of commercial quantities of this fuel.
Nor does the UK neglect to address SMRs which can play an important role in renewable hydrogen production.
